ON STARTING A BUSINESS...

I became quite appalled at the rate we complain about stuff and how things do not go as planned.  Just persuing through the Facebook status update 80% of the time someone is complaining about  something or talking about haters and stuff. Has our society became so mediocre that we have became so unhappy and complaining about everything?

Do not get me wrong. We have every right to complain. If things do not go well we are bound to complain. However, there is an upside to it. Look around you. What kind of solutions can you offer? Examine the problems closely. Are there any solutions you can provide to mitigate such? Well if you can Congratulations! You just became an entrepreneur. Mind you most problem solving activities usually come with earning a bit of extra cash on the side. You stay winning!

Most of my mentors advise me that you should follow your passion. Very true. Following your passion entails dong something that can make you so happy and stress free whilst you enjoy doing it. Case in point: I am a computer enthusiast. I have been fascinated by these fast evolving  machines from Day 1 when I was attempting my actuarial course in Australia c. 2002. From there on I obtained my first ever computer, an Aopen Openbook 11" with 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD & 1.12 Ghz AMD processor. Fully loaded with Microsoft Windows XP Pro it was a marvel.
I then learnt a bit of Linux, dual OS booting, computer peripherals, disassembling and assembling  a computer, installing OS, fixing OS, recovering data and soon developing small scale scripts & apps.

When I came to Botswana I turned that into a passive income and upped my coding skills with a bit of web development and small scale apps. I then offered my services to friends, colleagues and relatives and now I run a part-time IT consultancy that earns a decent passive income. All this I did without even having a company until recently. On that note, the Botswana government is mulling increasing the VAT threshold to P1m per year which is advantageous for us entrepreneurs and SMMEs. (2014 -2015 budget speech)

So go out there. See what you can start without capital. Money is not the only resource needed to start a business or to earn an income.No. Human resources in terms of your mind and ability to solve problems coupled with passion and drive in  all you do is the key. Especially in a place where sourcing investment is a bit of hurdle and having to apply for most government financial  aid requires endless  checklist.

And enjoy what you do while you are at it.
